STEP

Collect General Information: 1 Week

To fully comprehend what goes into getting a real estate license in Kansas, you need to do some research to give yourself time to understand all the requirements for licensure.

This includes everything from general eligibility to education and even how to submit your application.

The best place to start collecting all the important information is on the Kansas Real Estate Commission website.

Here you’ll find FAQs and resources to help you begin your journey.

2
STEP

Complete Pre-Licensing Education: 2-6 Weeks

Whether working toward a salesperson or broker license in Kansas, you will have 60 hours of pre-licensing education to complete.

The format in which you complete this requirement greatly influences how long it will take. If you’re able to go to class during the day, you could be done in as little as 2-3 weeks.

If you’re only able to attend classes in the evenings, it will probably take twice as long.

For those who can devote 40 hours per week online, working at their own pace, you could even be done before two weeks are up.

For both license types, the 60 hours are broken into two, 30-hour courses.

Those getting a salesperson license must take Principles of Real Estate and the Kansas Practice Course.

Those getting a broker license take the Kansas Real Estate Broker Management Course and, for those not licensed in another state, the Kansas Real Estate Broker Fundamentals Course.

Credit for your pre-licensing education is only valid for a year for almost all courses, although the Kansas Practice Course only stays valid for six months.

3
STEP

Schedule the Real Estate Exam: 1 Day

Figuring out how long you should study for the real estate exam after finishing your pre-licensing classes will help you decide when it’s time to schedule the actual test.

To double-check you’re fully prepared, don’t forget to review the exam outline found in the Kansas Real Estate Candidate Handbook.

You can also check out the topics covered in the test, as well as tips for acing it on your first try, by reading our article on what to study for the Kansas real estate exam.

To schedule, you’ll go through Pearson VUE. You can make your exam reservation online or call 800-274-4971. At this time you’ll also have to pay the $82 test fee.

Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule your test to ensure availability on the date you want.

4
STEP

Complete Background Check: 1 Day

Since certain Pearson VUE testing centers also offer digital fingerprinting, you’ll most likely want to make this appointment at the same time you schedule your test.

If you’re not at a testing location that offers this service, you can get fingerprints through your local law enforcement agency or an authorized printing entity.

The Kansas Real Estate Commission provides fingerprint kits if you need one, but they should also be available on site where you get your prints taken.

In addition to completing your fingerprint card, you must also submit a waiver to authorize your criminal record check through the state Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.

While you will get your appointment done in a matter of minutes, it can take close to two weeks for the Commission to receive your full background report.

Should you have a past violation, refer to our guide on getting a Kansas real estate license with violations to know what to do next to get eligibility.

5
STEP

Sit for the Exam: 1 Day

When test day finally arrives, make sure you eat a good breakfast, have directions to the testing center, and arrive with plenty of time to check in.

It’s suggested you get your testing location at least 30 minutes early.

The test itself will last four hours, with 2.5 hours for the national section, and 1.5 hours for the state section.

This should give you ample time to tackle the 80 questions in the national portion and the 30 (salesperson) or 40 (broker) questions in the state portion.

To pass, you need a minimum score, in each section, of 70.

If you don’t pass the first time, you are able to schedule a retake 24 hours after failing. You will have to pay a retake fee of $75 each time.

6
STEP

Look for a Sponsoring Broker: 1-2 Weeks

The next step in your licensing process is to find a sponsoring broker. This is for those getting a salesperson license.

You’ll want to set aside some time to complete this task to ensure you find the right fit. This is someone who you’ll work with, so make sure you choose the right real estate brokerage to work for.

To help narrow down your search, check out our directory of top real estate brokerages in Kansas.

From there, create a list of top possible brokers and set up interviews to get to know them a little before deciding.

7
STEP

Complete License Application: 1-3 Days

Your application must be done within six months of finishing your second pre-licensing education course, so it’s best not to waste too much time after you pass the exam.

You’ll receive all the documentation and instructions you need for your application at your Pearson VUE testing site after you pass.

Submitting a complete application via email or fax is the preferred way to complete this step in the process.

You’ll also pay an application fee at this time — $125 for a salesperson license and $175 for a broker license.

8
STEP

Take Continuing Education Courses: 1-4 Weeks

A real estate license in Kansas must be renewed every two years.

To figure out when you need to renew your license, check out your pocket card. It lists the expiration date. The Commission will also send a reminder email 45 days out.

During this two-year window, you’ll need to complete 12 hours of continuing education.

Within these 12 hours, three must be taken in a Kansas required core class. The remaining hours can be taken as elective courses.

You can find a list of approved CE schools and course offerings in our database of the best real estate schools in Kansas.
