Who Is the Instructor of FortuneBuilders Mastery?

FortuneBuilders was started by Than Merrill, Paul Esajian, and Konrad Sopielnikow in 2007 to provide real estate coaching to new and experienced investors.

All three FortuneBuilders owners are hugely successful real estate investors with decades of experience in buying and selling various types of property.

Together, the founders have invested more than $1B in over 1,000 residential and commercial properties. They also manage 25 to 40 properties at any given time.

At the moment, none of the founders serve as coaches in the Mastery Program although they do attend the 3-day workshop for aspiring full-time investors.

Instead, there’s a team of FortuneBuilders members to walk you through the course.

The FortuneBuilders trainers’ team is mainly made up of students who’ve taken the course and gone ahead to become successful investors.

  • Alex and Kathy Schuck — Licensed realtors that took the program in 2010 to scale their rehabbing business. They became FortuneBuilders coaches two years later in 2012. Alex and Kathy currently run the Boston FortuneBuilders Mastery Meet-up that occurs monthly.
  • Angela Gregg — A live coach that has been taking students through the program since 2013. Together with her husband, Angela runs a real estate business which operates in Honolulu and Colorado Springs.
  • Barbara Bauer-Chen — A licensed real estate agent in Virginia since 2015 when she also joined FortuneBuilders. Barbara and her husband are active real estate investors who’ve rehabbed numerous properties, with a particular focus on rentals (single-family, college rentals, and mixed-use commercial).
  • Chad Tate — An investor, real estate developer, and community business leader who got into real estate investing through the FortuneBuilders program in 2009. He became a coach in 2011 and currently owns a huge rental portfolio.
  • Chris Banks — A long-time real estate investor who began coaching in 2012. As an investor, he’s focused on wholesale and short-term deals.
  • Christina Macri — A licensed real estate agent in California and New York who primarily acquires buy and hold properties. After joining FortuneBuilders in 2012, she expanded her portfolio to include wholesales, rehabs, and passive income acquisitions.
  • Craig Barton — An experienced real estate investor in Tucson, Arizona who joined the program in 2011 and began coaching in 2015. Craig currently hosts a real estate investment club with hundreds of members and counting.
  • David Fair — The co-owner of SELL NOW RGV, an all-in-one tool for real estate investing. He is also a successful real estate investor focusing on step-by-step real estate wholesaling and rehabs.
  • Dennis Cammack — A full-time real estate investor who has been in the business for over four decades. He currently operates a commercial mortgage business, owns two other small businesses, and serves as a real estate and small business consultant.
  • Dennis Hoffman — A licensed real estate agent in Colorado and a graduate of the Mastery Program. Dennis has done transactions worth over $35 million as an investor and agent. In 2015, FortuneBuilders students voted him as the coach that has most exceeded expectations.
  • Eddie Bodkin — An active real estate investor who got into the business in 2009. Eddie currently owns Rock Solid Real Estate LLC, a real estate investment company focusing on wholesaling, rehabbing, foreclosures, probates, turnkey rentals, and raising private money.
  • Erica May — An active investor who started flipping houses in 2007. She joined the FortuneBuilders Program in 2011 and since then, she has invested in numerous properties, specifically focusing on mobile and single-family homes.
  • Guylaine Parthenais — A coaching member since 2015 with more than 25 years of experience in rehabbing, raising private money, and investing in rental properties.

  • Josh Hanson — A licensed real estate agent in Michigan and an active real estate investor with over 10 years of experience in the industry. He has been a coach since 2018, focusing on private money lending.
  • Lane Schloeder — An entrepreneur who started investing in real estate in 1990. He owns Tristate Properties & Development, an investment company based in California and New York with real estate holdings in half a dozen states. Lane has been a coach since 2013.
  • Wayne Evers — A licensed real estate professional in Florida who’s been investing in real estate since 1985. Coach Evers is proficient in wholesaling, foreclosures, short sales, rental income properties, and tax lien and tax deeds.

Is FortuneBuilders Mastery Legit or a Scam?

The FortuneBuilders Mastery program is a legitimate course that has been around for almost two decades as of 2023.

Within that time, the FortuneBuilders brand has grown quite popular, appearing on hit TV shows like Flip That House and receiving recognition in prestigious corporate awards such as Inc. Magazine’s Top 500 Companies list.

FortuneBuilders Mastery has also had thousands of students since its launch. This is indicated by the numerous mentions and reviews the real estate investing course has received on Facebook, Trustpilot, and BiggerPockets.

Additionally, Than Merrill, the program’s founder and main instructor, is a public figure within the real estate community.

He has over 20,000 followers on Facebook where he provides real estate investing tips and news.

Still, Than Merrill and his brand have been accused of being a scam due to the program’s steep charges and not disclosing the high fees to users before they sign up.

Although there are bad reviews that may be true, there’s enough evidence to prove that FortuneBuilders Mastery is not a scam.
